Research Software Engineer
Victor Alvarez
Building large-scale data systems at the intersection of research and practice.
About
Research mindset, production systems.
Over the years, I’ve worked across academia and industry, from research in algorithms and data structures to technical leadership in high-impact technology organizations. My interests include distributed systems, data platforms, algorithms, performance engineering, and the craft of building reliable software at scale.
Before my career in software engineering, I spent several years rowing competitively and . That experience shaped many of the values I still rely on today: discipline, resilience, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Research & Innovation
Publications, and selected academic work.
I maintain an archive of peer-reviewed publications and collaborations developed throughout my doctoral and industrial research years. I also include some teaching activities as part of the broader story of turning ideas into systems and sharing knowledge with others.

An unconventional path.
Outside of engineering, I remain interested in sports, photography, lifelong learning, and the challenge of continually reinventing oneself.
When I’m not building data systems, you’ll often find me behind a camera. Some of my photographs can be found on Flickr.
From competitive rowing to computer science, from algorithms research to systems, my career has followed an unconventional path. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
